In your first trimester a Dating scan is performed between weeks 6 to 12 to check for the viability of your pregnancy and to establish an Estimated Due Date (EDD). The optimal time for this scan is between weeks 8 to 12. This will ensures that the fetus is clearly visible and will allow more accurate measurements of the crown to rump length (CRL) of the fetus.
The Nuchal Translucency scan is performed between weeks 12-14 to assess the risk for down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormality such as Edwards and Patau syndrome. This scan is usually done followed by a blood test for maternal screening.
What does the Nuchal Translucency Scan Include?
You are now deep into the second trimester and have been given the reassurance of seeing your baby on the screen in the previous scans. However, it’s now the time to assess if baby is healthy and progressing well. The Morphology scan also known as Anomaly is a routine diagnostic scan done from weeks 18-22. Its a very detailed scan that has advanced checks over the fetus anatomy, growth and observes placenta position, umbilical cord, amniotic fluid, uterus, ovaries and cervix.
What does the Morphology Scan Include?
The Growth Scan is done in the third trimester from weeks 23 onward and is an optional scan referred by your GP or Obstetrician. This scan is only required from your health provider if you are having multiple pregnancy i.e twins/triplets, complications in the pregnancy or if they have health concerns of your baby. Other than this the Morphology at your second trimester will be your last required scan until delivery date.
As the baby approaches the delivery date the bones are more dense and imaging of the internal structure can become obscured. Hence the growth scan is not as detailed as the morphology scan and will focus more on the growth of the fetus by obtaining bio-metrical measurements.
