A dating ultrasound scan is typically performed between 6 to 12 weeks of pregnancy. During this critical period, the scan provides valuable insight into your baby’s early growth and helps establish a clear framework for the months ahead.
When you arrive, you’ll fill out a brief form noting details such as your last menstrual period, if known. Our experienced sonographer will call you into the scanning room and explain the procedure, ensuring you feel fully prepared.
1. Abdomen:
In this method, you’ll lie comfortably on an examination table. A water-soluble gel is applied to your abdomen, and the sonographer will gently move the ultrasound probe over the area to capture clear images of the uterus and developing baby. A full bladder often helps achieve more detailed results, as it provides a better window for imaging.
2. Vaginal:
In some cases, especially very early in pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may provide clearer images. You’ll be asked to empty your bladder and change into a gown. A sterile, covered probe is carefully inserted into the vagina. By adjusting the probe’s angle and pressure, the sonographer can obtain detailed views of the uterus, ovaries, and developing embryo. This method often yields more accurate images, ensuring you receive the most precise information about your baby’s early growth.
Using ultrasound throughout pregnancy is safe. A vaginal scan does not affect the health of your unborn child.
On the day, the scan may take up to 15 minutes.
You must have a full bladder before you arrive for your scan. We can view your uterus and ovaries more clearly when your bladder is full. We typically advise drinking two glasses of water 30 minutes before your scan.
